The History of AIP Certified Coach

The AIP Certified Coach program is the premier training for professionals wanting to integrate the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) into their work with clients and patients. Originally created in 2017 by autoimmune health leaders Mickey Trescott, MSc, and Angie Alt, NTC, CHC, in collaboration with Sarah Ballantyne, PhD, the program was the first of its kind to combine scientific evidence with practical, client-centered application.

Now in a fully updated and expanded format reflecting the body of research using AIP for various autoimmune conditions, the program is led by Mickey Trescott, MSc, and Jaime Hartman, MEd, NBC-HWC. Together Mickey and Jaime bring deep clinical experience and a shared commitment to delivering high-quality education designed for busy healthcare professionals. In 2023, they reimagined the curriculum from the ground up, integrating the latest published research on AIP, lessons learned from years of client work, and enhanced instructional design. New guest lectures from experienced AIP Certified Coaches cover vital topics like immunology, eating disorders, body inclusivity, occupational therapy, and culturally responsive care—ensuring the AIP Certified Coach program remains relevant, inclusive, and rigorous.

To date, over 1,000 practitioners worldwide have become certified. Nearly half of the alumni live outside the US and Canada, with strong representation across Europe, the UK, Australia, and South America. The community spans a wide range of disciplines—from health coaches, nutritionists, and bodyworkers to naturopathic doctors, acupuncturists, and licensed medical professionals—fostering a rich network of collaboration between natural and conventional systems of care.

The AIP Certified Coach program is closely connected to ongoing research, with seven published medical studies demonstrating the protocol’s effectiveness for conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Due to consistently high demand, the program is offered twice per year and continues to grow a vibrant, worldwide community of certified autoimmune coaches dedicated to helping clients reclaim their health.

AIP Medical Research Summary

Scientific research on the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) has grown steadily over the past decade, with multiple peer-reviewed studies supporting its potential to improve outcomes in autoimmune conditions. Below is a summary of the evidence to date.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s & UC)

  1. Pilot Trial – Konijeti et al., 2017
A prospective study of 15 patients with long-standing IBD found that 73% achieved clinical remission by week 6 on an AIP intervention. Many were already on biologic medications and had not previously achieved remission.
  2. Quality of Life Study – Chandrasekaran et al., 2019
Using the SIBDQ survey, researchers observed an increase in quality-of-life scores from 46.5 to 61.5 during the 11-week AIP intervention.
  3. Gene Expression Study – Chandrasekaran et al., 2019
RNA analysis from intestinal biopsies identified over 300 gene expression changes linked to reduced inflammation and enhanced immune regulation.
  4. Community Survey – Konijeti et al., 2020
In a survey of 78 IBD patients using AIP, 73% reported remission, and 32% discontinued steroid medications. The most common reintroduction triggers included gluten (58%) and processed foods (52%).

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

  1. Pilot Trial – Abbott et al., 2019
In a 10-week AIP program for 17 women, symptom burden decreased by 68%, hs-CRP dropped by 29%, and six participants were able to reduce or stop thyroid medication.
  2. Polish Study – Ihnatowicz et al., 2024
In a 12-week personalized AIP intervention, participants experienced reduced TSH, improved thyroid ultrasound findings, better body composition, and significantly increased nutrient density.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

  1. Qualitative Study – McNeill, 2021
Interviews with 10 AIP adopters revealed that symptom relief—particularly pain reduction—was a key motivator for sticking with the protocol. Social support played a major role in success.
  2. Pilot Intervention – McNeill, 2022
Preliminary results from a mixed-methods pilot study in RA patients showed potential improvements in fatigue, pain, and sleep. Full publication is forthcoming.

AIP Certified Coach Ethics Statement

At AIP Certified Coach we train practitioners on the science and implementation of the Autoimmune Protocol within a holistic understanding of health. In the simplest terms, we believe we are all linked and that seeking health and building community is an interdependent project that must be rooted in social equity.

While autoimmune disease is not limited to a particular age, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, religion, ethnicity, or nationality, we recognize that systemic barriers in our world result in certain groups such as Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) facing disproportionate burdens in health and accessing care. These same systems of racism and oppression have structured what has long been a highly homogenous medical/healthcare field, which further disadvantages diverse patient populations.

Here at AIP Certified Coach we believe it is our collective responsibility to engage in the critical thinking and work necessary to advance social and health equity. We are committed to fostering an anti-racist, anti-oppressive and inclusive environment where diversity of all kinds (both in client and practitioner) can shine and healing partnerships are the norm.
